“Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. ” -1 Timothy 5:8
“Children who mistreat their father or chase away their mother are an embarrassment and a public disgrace.” – Proverbs 19:26
Jesus taught his disciples to that “Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:43-45
Everybody wants to lead. However, we sometimes forget the rule of true leadership. That to be a good leader one is to be a good follower first. The leader leads by becoming the example of true servanthood.
And if you come to think of it, that is what exactly our parents did to us. They led us by serving us. They have spent a great amount of time serving and taking care of us when we were still very young and can hardly do anything at all. They’ve taught us to talk; if not because of them we wouldn’t know our first ABCs. They were the first to provide us knowledge when we were still ignorant. They’ve taught us to stand and guided us on how to walk until we had our first step; if not because of them we will never know how to run. They’ve spent sleepless nights just to take care of us when we were sick. They have been a servant to us. That is why we understood then that we have to obey and follow them. We trusted them.
But as time passed by and now that we’ve learned to speak on our own and realized that we can already run miles away without their help, we started to take them for granted. We hate them for reprimanding us and we have somehow left them alone thinking that they have nothing to do with our lives anymore because we’re grown-ups already.
Yet, this is not the way the bible teaches us. Now that we are able, it is time to give back and repay their service to us. It is now our chance to offer and give our service to them. We may say we already have our responsibilities at work, at school, in the church, or that we have other things to take care of but the bible says that “their first responsibility is to show godliness at home and repay their parents by taking care of them” for “this is something that pleases God.” 1 Timothy 5:4
Some of our parents may not be the parents that we like or want but know they are just the perfect one for us because God chose to them for us. Soon, us ourselves will become a leader on our own households or probably we already are right now, but remember that to be the first is to be the last among all.
Give back. Serve mom and dad because as you do so you are actually serving God.
