Week 9: Friday – Honor Mom and Dad (By Listening Intently)

“Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” -Proverbs 23:22

More than the material gifts, more than the advice, and more than any financial assistance, when the time comes that we are capable of giving, our parents want our attention.

In today’s busy and cluttered world, take more time to spend with your family. Take a lot of time spent just listening to your parents to whatever they have to say. It may be a story that they have told over and over; whether it’s a reminder or a correction they keep on repeating, don’t get tired and just listen intently. Value their council and keep it in mind and heart. “A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.” Proverbs 13:1

Yao Ming, a retired NBA Player, understood the importance of spending time with family and parents when he advised Jeremy Lin about the fame and fortune that he is experiencing.

“When you become an overnight star, a lot of things will happen to you. So during this time, I hope that he spends time with his beloved family because only family members will provide him unconditional support.”**

Never be too occupied to converse and listen. Remember that our first ministry is our family. That’s why the bible keeps on dealing with our relationship to them and how we treat the members especially the parents.

And honoring them is the pathway to God’s blessing.

“Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” Deuteronomy 5:16
