WEEK 30: Friday

ShermanQuote 2

DAY 5

“All work can be ‘sacred’. Sacred because it is God at work – being accomplished through everyday people in their everyday occupations” – Doug Sherman

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life —your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life — and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. – Romans 12:1 (MSG)

We use the common expression Thank God It’s Friday! And most of the time we say it with a sigh. But Thank God It’s Friday is supposed to indicate satisfaction with the end of the workweek. Not with exhaustion. Notice in this verse that the enjoyment you experience from working is a gift from God:

And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life – that is indeed a gift from God. – Ecclesiastes 5:19 NLT

And we see in the creation of the universe that work is a gift from God. He created the universe and He saw that it was good in every way. All legitimate work you do today is an extension of God’s work. Are you able to manage everything He gives you faithfully?

Different people work for different reasons. Some work to SUSTAIN their everyday needs and survive. Others work to ACHIEVE and be successful. And there are those who work to INSPIRE and be significant.

Doug Sherman said it beautifully: “All work can be ‘sacred’. Sacred because it is God at work – being accomplished through everyday people in their everyday occupations.”

George Bernard Shaw put it this way: “This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose…”

Look at the story of this 81-year old man who has spent much of the last three decades of his life sharing his wealth to support universities all over the world with an unusual degree of anonymity – that’s why he’s called a secret billionaire.

His name is Charles “Chuck” Feeney. He was born during the Great Depression and was an entrepreneur at an early age. But his principle is this:

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create economic and educational opportunity on a transformational scale.” – Chuck Feeney
