Day 2: Pray When it is Difficult, All the more when it is Not
Turn the mess into a message and pain into purpose. -Anonymous
Are you hurting? Pray. Do you feel great? Sing. James 5:13 (MSG)
As one excerpt from a song goes about our prayers:
We pray for blessings, we pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep
We pray for healing, for prosperity
We most of the time think that we completely know what we need and want in our lives. Hence, we pray for blessings, peace, comfort, protection, for healing, for prosperity, and for wisdom.
But sometimes what happens is the opposite of what we prayed for. Discomfort, chaos, and hardship come instead. We assume the Lord does not hear us and our prayers have gone in vain, or so we thought.
We pray like of Paul when he was given a thorn on the flesh that difficulties will be taken away from us. Yet God, out of his deep and unfathomable love for, answers, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ 2Corinthians 12:9
God alone know what exactly our needs are. He’s answers are sometimes not of our likings but they are of no doubt what we need. As the song above continues:
All the while You hear each spoken need
Yet love is way too much to give us lesser things
What if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if my greatest disappointments or the aching of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can’t satisfy
What if trials of this life, the rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are you mercies in disguise
David, the man after God’s own heart, produced his warmest and sweetest psalms for God during times of persecution, loneliness, aching, and nothingness.
The Lord breaks and empties us for only in this condition we will find our fullness and true being in Him. On our knees He turns our messy life into a message and our pains into purpose.
All the same that we should pray, in times of comfort. It easier to get on our knees during difficulties than during easiness. Most Christians fall during these times. When in victory, all the more bow down before God’s presence. Ask for yet another burden to fire up your faith. Sing praises and give thanks for everything. This is the sacrifice He desires from us more than anything else.
‘You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken spirit and a repentant heart, O God.” Psalm 51:16
